Grooming & Trail Crew Manager

The Sun Valley Grooming and Trail Crew Manager works to execute the resort’s goals to obtain the highest quality of snow surface product in the industry in the winter and the best trails in the summer. This is a full time year round position and the successful candidate will be: a strong team builder, team player, business focused, results-oriented, able to work at the strategic and tactical levels, energetic and able to demonstrate excellent communication skills.   


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend and participate in weekly Mountain Manager meetings.
  • Meet with department staff on a regular basis.
  • Manage and supervise Grooming and Trail Crew staff
  • Appraise and discipline staff accordingly.


Winter Season: Snow Grooming

  • Supervise the Grooming of ski runs with snow grooming machines.
  • Ensure grooming is done in consideration of the safety of skiers and boarders.
  • Determine which ski runs will be groomed and the techniques that will be used: This is determined by skiing or boarding each ski run and analyzing the problems that may have arisen on each ski run throughout the day.
  • Inspect each ski run that has been groomed the previous evening to assess the quality of the job performance of these groomers.
  • Develop work schedules according to the strengths and weaknesses of the grooming crew and communicate these schedules with the appropriate staff.
  • Meet daily with staff before and after certain shifts to discuss the team's goals, objectives,
  • Provide a safe, motivated, positive, productive, and successful working environment. 
  • Provide the Mountain Director with appropriate, effective and accurate daily reporting.

Summer Season: Trail Crew

  • Communicate the mountain’s needs to the appropriate Trail Crew Supervisor(s).
  • Monitor the mountain to determine which trails require maintenance.
  • Ensure the staff is well trained in all aspects of their position with a focus on safety.
  • Provide Supervisor(s) and staff with support, guidance, and direction.
  • Anticipate the benefits of summer mountain maintenance for the following winter season.



  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • At least 5 years full time experience with Snow Grooming
  • Snowmaking experience and a working knowledge of Trail Crew Operations.
  • Current driver's license
  • Advanced skiing or snowboarding ability.
  • Heavy equipment operating experience.
